6 Ways to Organize Your Garage

Having a garage is an asset to any house since you can use to store all those things that don’t really belong in your home, but you don’t want to leave outside year round exposed to the elements. You might find, though, that your garage just becomes a dumping ground for all of the stuff you don’t know what to do anything else with. There are some simple ways to organize your garage which take minimal effort, and are easy to maintain on a regular basis.

Install a Pegboard

Pegboards are really helpful because they allow you to hang small tools, or rolls of tape in plain sight. What else is completely awesome about these boards is that they are completely customizable and you can redesign them at anytime if your needs change.

Install Some Lockers

You can probably find some old high school lockers at a garage sale, and you can assign one of them to each of your family members. This way, everyone in your house can have their own space to contain whatever items they may want. This is a great idea if your family is especially active and you have a lot of sports equipment to store.

Install Ceiling Hangers

Theses are really great for hanging bikes or other sports equipment that would otherwise take up space on the garage floor. Bikes will hang well from the ceiling and you can free up a lot of floor space so you can use your garage for actually parking the car like it’s meant for.

Use Gum Containers

If you purchase the large containers of gum that are plastic you can reuse them when they’re empty. You can use these containers for organizing nails and screws and similar small pieces. This means you won’t have drawers full of them rolling around and you can easily find what you need.

Use PVC Pipe to Store Shovels

If you fasten pieces of PVC pipe to the wall you can store your shovels upright. Make sure when you fasten them to the wall you align them properly, and you will probably need two portions to ensure the shovels stay upright but it will be really easy to find exactly what you’re looking for when you need it.

Use a Shoe Organizer

If you do a lot of crafts or painting in your garage, and therefore have spray paint cans just laying around then hang a cloth shoe organizer from the wall and store the cans in the shoe pockets. This way you can easily see all the colours you have, and know exactly what you’re looking for without rummaging through boxes or cupboards for the colour you want.

Make a Drying Space

If you have a really active family then you might find that you are laying out jackets, snow pants and other various items of clothing so that they will dry properly. Instead of clothes scattered around your garage you can install a beam between two walls, if they’re close together, or you can have one hanging from the ceiling and you can use it to hang clothes or even sports equipment up. This is great because it means you don’t have to take up as much space as laying them out, and you won’t have the musty smell of sports equipment that didn’t dry properly anymore.

Organizing your garage can be easy and simple to maintain if you really think about how you’re going to use your space. If your family isn’t all that active then don’t install tools mostly used to storing sports equipment like bikes or hockey sticks, but instead you may want to find ways to easy store and access your gardening tools if you use them frequently. The most important part of effective organizing is ensuring you can still use what’s important to you and you can find it when you need it. So before you purchase any organization tools, think about how you’re going to use your space and design storage surrounding that.
